Hi all,

We’ve had to change our scheduled January talk on mobile development by James Hughes, as James’s wife is going into labour shortly! We wish them all the best. Hopefully we can reschedule his talk for some time later in the year, as we know there was a lot of interest.

In it’s place, we’re going to be discussing Semantic Versioning and Dependency Management. Same time, same place i.e. January 18th, 6.30 in the Central Hotel

Jacob will be introducing Semantic Versioning and talking about the concept of breaking changes in .NET. This will then continue into an overview of Nuget and how it allows you to simplify your dependency management as well as simplify the publication of packages for others to integrate into their projects. This part will also show how to integrate dependency management into your build automation process.

After this we’ll open it up to the floor for a general discussion on the topics. Will be very interesting to hear how others are managing the issue

Hope to see you all on Wednesday

Mobile, How Do I Develop Thee? Let Me Count the Ways

Mobile development is a bit like writing web apps back in the browser war days – full of decision anxiety, volatility and platform specific issues. There is no one true answer yet most people think there should be. This talk will cover the popular(ish) options from native all the way to web solutions (and all the mashup magic in-between). Oh yes and some opinion as well.

The talk is going to be about mobile development across multiple platforms and should appeal to all developers who are curious about the mobile space, regardless of their programming background and preference. Expect some lively discussion about experiences and frustrations

We had a good turnout for the last talk, and since James is making the trip from Belfast we hope we can repeat the success.

Date is January 18th at 6.30 in the Central Hotel

Register on EventBrite.

On Wednesday the 23rd of November we are planning to talk about REST and ASP.NET MVC. As usual it will take place in Central Hotel in Dublin City Center. Note that the time is 6:30PM this time.

You can sign up at EventBrite.

Many websites claim to be RESTful when they use a pretty URL structure. ASP.NET MVC makes it very easy to set up a website with pretty URLs and return web pages or JSON. But REST is more than simply keeping your site structure clean and returning JSON. This session will go through some simple changes that makes it possible for a an ASP.NET MVC site to make it observe RESTful principles making it accessible both as web site and a web service. The changes will tie into a sample for writing LINQ queries directly to a RESTful service.

See you there, and don’t forget if there is a topic you want covered in the following meetup talk to us either in person or through the discussion group

On Wednesday the 12th of October we are meeting up at 7pm in the Central Hotel

For October we are trying a slightly different approach

Vim the basics, plus a little more.. By Cormac McGuire

Last year a programmer friend of mine told me she was using vim to do all her development. I couldn’t understand why anyone would do that to themselves. Surely black screens for coding were for the 80s. Then I learned how to use it…..

Vim is fast, easy to use once you understand it, massively configurable and perhaps most importantly available on pretty much every *nix and linux server out there.

I’ll be showing the basics of vim, what the modes are and how they work. How to insert copy, paste and navigate from the comfort of your keyboard. We’ll also look at how to get your vim looking and feeling the way you like it. Vim also has a surprising amount of plugins. I’ll show you how to install these and pimp out your vim.

Code Kata: Grzegorz Caban will be driving the String Calculator Code Kata.

See you there, and don’t forget if there is a topic you want covered in the following meetup talk to us either in person or through the discussion group

Our next meetup will be on the 8th of June. Richard Dalton has kindly offered to do a talk for us. See details below.

For organizational purposes, don’t forget to pick up a ticket. Event is free as always, but it’s nice to know how many will be there.

See you there!

The Missing Link – Pushing Through The Pain Of TDD
Richard Dalton

If you’ve ever watched a skilled Test Driven Developer in Full flow it’s a
thing to behold. They move swiftly and assuredly taking multiple tiny
steps in places where you perhaps see only one large step, if you see any
steps at all.

When the job is done you’ll feel like it was all so simple and logical
that surely you could have gotten there too, but for some reason it never
seems to go to plan. You find yourself wondering how many more books and
articles you need to read, how many more presentations and Kata videos you
need to sit through before it all “Clicks” for you.

This session focuses on the pain that TDD practitioners encounter after
the first flush of success. It’s about the challenges we face as we move
from simple contrived examples to making TDD work for “Real” problems, and
the “Aha!” moments that move us on to the next level.

The Irony of TDD is that it promotes the idea of tiny incremental steps,
but for most of us learning to practice TDD our focus is on the magicians
out on the horizon. This session will pull you back to reality and give
some closer targets to aim at.

When you leave this session, the magicians will still be a long way out in
front, but you’ll be a couple of steps closer, and hopefully you’ll have a
renewed sense of optimism that you can get there.

Microsoft have been kind enough to open up some places to members of the development community who may be interested in attending.

The event will take place at the Westbury Hotel in Dublin center over two days, during work hours:

Tuesday, 10th May from 13:00 to 17:00 – Windows Phone App Accelerator
Specifically for registered developers whose app has failed to pass certification. Jeff will help you get over the line.

Wednesday 11th May from 9:00 to 17:00 – Windows Phone Developer Boot Camp
Deep dive training on developing for Windows Phone. To attend you should preferably be a phone developer or have an app in the making.

Wednesday evening there will be a more general introduction and overview of the Windows Phone development platform for those who want to get started on developing for the phone.

The events are free, but you will need to get in touch with Dave Northey (daven@microsoft.com) to get your attendance registration.
